Governor Kay Ivey appointed Vernon Barnett to serve as commissioner of the Alabama Department of Revenue in May 2017. Commissioner Barnett was appointed to the FTA Board of Trustees in 2019 and currently serves as the Board’s second vice president. 

Commissioner Barnett has worked in state government for over 25 years serving as a deputy solicitor general, deputy legal advisor to the governor, chief deputy commissioner of the Department of Corrections, and executive counsel of the Department of Environmental Management.

Commissioner Barnett is a former chairman of the Multistate Tax Commission, a vice chairperson of the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee, a member of the Senior Executive Board of the Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud Information Sharing and Analysis Center, and a member of the Southeastern Association of Tax Administrators Executive Committee.

He earned degrees from Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama School of Law. He and his wife have two children.
