Shellie Hughes was appointed executive director of the Nevada Department of Taxation in August 2021.
In her role, she delivers statewide tax policy, department leadership, strategic planning, legal case strategy and management and overall administrative governance. She has more than 19 years of experience in state and local tax law.
In addition to serving as the chief administrative officer of the department and secretary of the Nevada Taxation Commission, Hughes also serves as secretary to the State Board of Equalization and directs department staffing for all department boards and commissions.
Her prior roles include chief deputy executive director for the Nevada Department of Taxation, chief legal advisor to Chairman Jerome E. Horton of the California State Board of Equalization, tax counsel for the California State Board of Equalization Legal Department Appeals Division in business and special taxes, and graduate student assistant for the California Franchise Tax Board.
Hughes graduated from McGeorge School of Law and received her Juris Doctorate degree with a tax concentration. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
